ACONCAGUA DESCRIPTION AND LOCATION

Aconcagua is the tallest mountain in South America; in fact, it is the tallest mountain in the world outside of Asia. As such it is one of the mountains that make up the "Seven Summits" tour, which consists of climbing the highest peak of every continent

Aconcagua is located in Argentina in the Province of Mendoza. Its name has several possible origins: from the Aymara, Kon-Kawa (Snowy Peak); the Araucano, in Chile, may have named it after one of their rivers, Aconca-Hue (that which comes from the other side); or from the Quechua, Akon-Kahuak, which means the Sentinel of Stone.

There is no better way, than getting to the top of this mountain, to appreciate the peaks and experience the breath-taking views of the amazing Cordillera de Los Andes. Aconcagua offers a variety of interesting routes for climbers of all levels. The Normal (or NW) Route is a physically demanding climb that includes all the logistical challenges of mountaineering on a high mountain.

The Polish Glacier Route, on the east side of the mountain, is a high altitude climb of moderate technical difficulty for the intermediate climber. Knowledge in glacier travel is essential. This route makes for a good training ground in high altitude ascents for those interested in attempting a Himalayan peak

Regardless of the route chosen, what makes this mountain so challenging is its high altitude and potentially extreme weather conditions. The prize, on the other hand, for one's hard work and dedication, is to stand on the tallest peak of the Western hemisphere

Good physical fitness, proper acclimatization, good logistical support and the leadership of an experienced guide all help increase the chances of success on this mountain.
